Cool Stuff I found on the web yesterday.

- MyBoneYard: Recycles electronic stuff. But unlike other similar efforts they will actually give you some cash for stuff you recycle. (Learned about it from GeekBrief.TV).
- An interesting piece on Mobuzz TV: Daily Buzz about the “micro blogging” twitter phenomenon, including a more secure wordpress service called prologue, and tweetmeme that keeps track of the most popular twitter conversations. (This 5 minute episode also includes some other, bizarre stuff, such as a woman who’se trying to get us to pay for her breast transplants - bymeboobs.)
- An very creative and interesting (and typical) episode of rocketboom, which is mainly about buying property on the moon.
- A really interesting web site with a video podcast from The University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg Public Policy Center, FactCheck.org, where they present facts that both democratic and republicans got wrong.

Speaking of Cool Stuff on the Web, I did start trying bookmarking things w/ Del.icio.us like we were talking about at the first class meeting. Nothing as cool as, like, property on the moon, though. http://del.icio.us/tag/mstweb

I looked at all the sites; mybondyard and the factcheck were really the only sites I found useful. I am not really into blogging or texting with people that I have ne earthly relatiionship with. I found the other sites that contained stuff about helping someone by new boobs really demonstrated how much mediocrity exists in web phenomena. I typically don’t waste a lot of time searching or listening to meaningless chatter like rocketboom seems to provide. I wasn’t really sure if it was supposed to be a comic satire of the news cast or what. I found myself becoming bored with the stories or not even sure what the broadcaster was trying to convey in the stories. I found the factcheck dialogue and posts interesting; I wondered what would happen after the elections have come and gone if this sort of site would still be accessed. I know some of this post is negative; I just want to be honest about my experience.

I think what fascinates me about all of this “cool stuff” is how easy it is to get sucked in! Off the tweetmeme link I found a link to this:

A little Super Tuesday hype for what it is worth.
I agree with Greg that some of the stuff just does not appeal to me. But then again, I sent out a video link to friends yesterday starring Whiplash the Rodeo Monkey.

On Tweetmeme: it strikes me how much there is not in English. For example, the top post at the moment is from a guy in Madrid. My guess is that it is simply that the sites I read are almost entirely in English, and so anything that reflects technology use at all more accurately really stands out. I also have the impression that many countries in Asia and Europe have had heavier cell phone messaging use for a while.
The other thing I remember reading recently was that fiction had found a new home on web-enabled cells. Apparently this is not news in Japan, but there are services that allow you to post additions to your novel as you write them on your phone. http://www.futureofthebook.org/blog/archives/2007/09/cellphone_fiction_in_japan.html . This winter I also saw a microfiction site for people to access with cell phones, but can’t find the link at the moment.

This was very interesting. First I did not know there was a way to recycle your old technology. I think this is a stellar idea that should have come around a lot sooner. I would have given them tons of my old junk instead of throwing it all out. I have little knowledge of what twitter really means so I don’t know what to say about that. I did find however the buymyboobs site to be a little rediculous. Are people really that dumb to waste money on some lady who can’t afford her own upgrades? There are tons of better places I know that the donated money could go. Just name one charity. Fast check is a good site to use because it shows you what you may have missed about our shotty politicians. I guess they can’t be right all the time. Buying space on the moon however seemed like a big joke. I found it interesting that the countries who did not make it to space are the ones saying it is ok to sell it.

It was fun to go through the links. Recycling old technology is indeed a novel idea. For a single person, it doesn’t seem like much but if we could have the philosophy ingrained in all of us, mother earth would be really proud!! Micro-blogging certainly seem to be gaining popularity! I also heard about moblog or the mobile blog in which you post content directly from your phone to the blog site. About the breast transplant thing, i believe there was a website couple of years ago in which people wanting the transplant would ask for help in the website. Maybe its the same website! Rocketboom was ok but it was really something during the Amanda Congdon days! As far as factcheck is concerned, its a nice website. I mentioned opensecrets.org in our last class which is basically the same type of website.
